Food preparation is integral to our practical life curriculum. Through food preparation activities, children develop various skills, including fine motor coordination, concentration, and independence.

At Liberté School, as in most Montessori classrooms, age-appropriated preparation activities often begin with simple tasks such as washing fruits and vegetables, slicing soft foods, or spreading butter on our homemade sourdough bread. As children progress, they can move on to more complex tasks, such as chopping vegetables with a real knife, measuring ingredients, and preparing simple meals like scrabbled eggs.

Our integration of food preparation emphasises hands-on learning and encourages children to take an active role in the process.

We teach children about nutrition and the importance of making healthy food choices, engage in mindful eating practices, such as taking time to appreciate the flavours and textures of their food while learning about the different food groups, how to read nutrition labels and the benefits of eating a balanced diet and an appreciation for the source of our food. Cognitive and social skills such as teamwork, leadership, planning and organising are developed by selecting the correct number of ingredients, planning a menu, and working together as a group to prepare a meal. The programme also encourages children to take care of themselves and their environment. They learn table manners and how to set the table and clean up after themselves to promote self-confidence, responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.

By exploring different traditions, types of food, ingredients, and cooking techniques, children are exposed to diverse cultures, fostering an appreciation for cultural diversity and promoting global awareness.

MEALS AND SNACKS POLICY

In line with our teaching practices, at Liberté, school meals are homemade, healthy and nutritional. We endeavour to minimise processed foods or food containing processed sugars and utilise healthy and in-season ingredients wherever possible. Special dietary requirements can unfortunately not be accommodated. However, cultural and nutritional preferences are respected, and parents of children with special dietary needs can pack food for their children.

Meal Times: Breakfast is served from 07:30 until 08:300. If children arrive after 08:00, please ensure that they have breakfast at home. Lunch will be served from 12h30 to 13h00. Healthy snacks are usually provided at 10:00 and 15:30. Snacks generally consist of fruit (pureed, dried or otherwise), natural yoghurt or similar. Please do not send sweets or chips to school.

Infants: Bottles, milk and formula should be provided by Parents according to the infant’s needs or as prescribed by a health care professional. Bottles should be pre-made/prepared at home.
