Our 3 – 6-year-old learning environment has been carefully prepared to promote independence and freedom of choice. In the classroom, children are allowed to learn and explore according to their interests and unique learning style, with teachers providing supportive guidance. Activities and lessons from science, mathematics, practical life, sensorial, language, art, music and culture all form part of our official Montessori curriculum. Classroom activities also focus on broader cognitive, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical aspects of development within a multi-age environment where younger children learn from older peers and older children to reinforce their learning by teaching younger ones.<\/p>\n

Libert\u00e9 School explicitly focus on the cognitive skills set called executive functions that form the foundation for the problem-solving skills, curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking abilities needed for primary school. Practical & Life Skills<\/div>
Practical activities provide meaningful experiences for children and help children develop life skills, independence, concentration, responsibility and coordination. In the classroom, children engage in various activities such as self-care, gardening, caring for the environment, food preparation and helping to clean and organise their learning space. <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Math<\/div>
Building upon the foundational concepts introduced in the earlier years, we delve into more complex mathematical concepts like the decimal system, place value and numeration, mathematical operations, fractions, geometry, and measurement. We combine hands-on materials, exploration, and individualised instruction to encourage the development of logical reasoning and creative problem-solving abilities to foster a lifelong love for mathematics.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Culture<\/div>
Our Culture section of the curriculum encompasses geography, history, science, ecology, art, music, and multicultural studies aimed at broadening children's understanding of the world, cultivating curiosity & respect for diversity, and developing an appreciation for different cultures and aspects of the world. <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Education of the senses: <\/div>
Sensorial materials and activities promote observation skills, discrimination, and cognitive development. With an increased understanding of the world, children are encouraged to use their senses to explore the world purposefully, laying the foundation for experiments, the scientific process, mathematics, geometry and physics.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Language<\/div>
Children between 3 and 6 show rapid language development. During this period, they develop the ability to communicate their thoughts and share their experiences with others. At Libert\u00e9 school, we support this period of language development by providing holistic, hands-on, multi-sensory and individualised activities with educational materials to promote vocabulary acquisition, phonemic awareness, and communication skills.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Reading & Writing<\/div>
Contrary to popular belief, ages 3 to 6 is a critical period for reading and writing, and, given their rapid language development, there is no better time to introduce children to letters, phonics (ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds in words) and teach them how ti read. Multi-sensory materials such as sandpaper letters, sand try writing, line following patterns and the movable alphabet lay the groundwork for emerging reading and writing skills.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Science<\/div>
Science education focuses on hands-on exploration, observation, and experimentation. It encourages children to engage with their surroundings, ask questions, make predictions, and develop a deeper understanding of the natural world, botany, zoology life cycles, earth science, etc. <\/div><\/div><\/div>

Physical Education<\/div>
At Libert\u00e9, we recognise the importance of physical development. We designed our classroom to encourage freedom of movement, make time for outdoor play, facilitate daily movement games promote gross motor skills, fine motor skills, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, all children participate in our Kinderkinetics program (paediatric biokineticist) to help develop strength, balance, coordination, spatial awareness, posture and physical stamina.<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Nature and Outdoor Exploration<\/a><\/div>
Outdoor exploration is integral to our curriculum. Our outdoor play area, adjacent to the Rietvlei nature reserve, provides opportunities for children to explore nature, promoting physical, emotional, and cognitive development. Activities such as gardening and studying the life cycle of plants develop respect for nature and scientific thinking skills through guided observation, questioning, and investigation. <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>
