Cognitive Science

Our educational philosophy is rooted in the science of learning and thinking, laying the foundation for the executive functioning skills needed to develop human intelligence. At the heart of our process are personal learning plans and educational activities that identify and take advantage of our learner’s strengths and talents to facilitate learning and intellectual development.

"Learning isn’t a way of reaching one’s potential but rather a way of developing it." - Anders Ericsson

At Liberté School, we believe that the best way to educate is to provide children with an environment where they are allowed to build on their potential and strengths by follow their interests, and learn autonomously among other children of diverse ages. Therefore, in contrast to lecturing, teachers provide the supportive guidance children need to navigate towards a better future.

Curriculum

Cognitive Science Applied to Education

Our cognitive development programme forms the golden thread that underpins the Liberté School pedagogy and educational philosophy. The programme is structured using individualised learning plans based on modern cognitive science that prioritises the development of executive functioning skills. This approach allows learners to apply concepts learned in mathematics, science, language studies, technology, applied and practical arts, commerce, sports, and creative arts to their unique interests in a fun, social and meaningful way.

Cambridge English Curriculum

Our English as a first language programme encourages a lifelong enthusiasm for reading, writing and spoken communication. The curriculum allows learners to build the broad communication skills needed to adapt the use of language to diverse cultural contexts and for different purposes and audiences by developing skills and understanding in four key areas: reading, writing, speaking and listening. This curriculum supports an integrated approach to teaching the four skills using a range of fiction genres, poetry, play scripts and non-fiction texts to provide authentic contexts for skills development.

Cambridge Mathematics

Our maths programme encourages students to develop their analytical thinking and reasoning abilities. Learners are taught skills in the mathematical strands of calculus, geometry, statistics and probability and apply them across the content areas of numbers, measurement, data handling and problem-solving to attain mathematical fluency. The programme’s design also incorporates higher-order executive functioning skills, where learners actively seek to make sense of mathematical ideas and concepts by building connections between theory and the real-world application of math principles via project-based learning in our practical and applied arts programme.

Cambridge Science

Our science programme helps learners develop a lifelong curiosity about the world and enables them to seek scientific explanations for the phenomena around them. The curriculum develops the scientific enquiry skills needed to understand, create, represent and test scientific models practically and theoretically. By considering scientific thinking and practical skills in the main areas of biology, chemistry, physics, technology, geography and astrology, our holistic approach encourages learners to think scientifically by developing practical skills alongside knowledge and understanding in a hands-on fashion.

Languages other than English

Liberté school believes in the benefits of acquiring an additional language. Besides communicating in another language than English, the benefits of learning an additional include greater academic achievement, greater cognitive development, and more positive attitudes towards other languages and cultures. We currently offer Afrikaans, German and French as the first additional language and hope to isiXhosa in the near future.

Commerce and Entrepreneurship

Our Commerce and Entrepreneurship program teaches children through hands-on experience to build entrepreneurial and commerce skills. It incorporates concepts such as budgets, supply and demand, the movement of goods and services, interpreting marketing and advertisements and sound financial decision-making. The program builds financial literacy and encourages critical thinking, effective communication, resilience and a belief in one’s ability to succeed through making and learning from mistakes.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT)

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and robotics can be regarded as a new ‘literacy’ alongside reading, writing and numeracy. Our Technology curriculum allows learners to look inside devices and understand the purpose of different components. They will develop robotics and coding skills in visual programming languages, such as Scratch, and learn that computers can only perform actions humans ask them to do.

Art, Design and Music

Liberté School’s creative arts programme encompasses visual arts, drama, movement, dance, and music. The programme allows learners to express themselves, sparking imagination and creativity and developing transferable skills like planning and organising. Our Music programme consists of theoretical and practical development, encouraging creative expression. One-on-One piano, guitar, and vocals are available, and Internal Assessments & Royal Academy of Music from Trinity College Examinations can be taken as an option.

Applied Arts & Design

Our applied arts programme focuses on the practical activities and skills to create and maintain functional objects. It includes elements of woodworking, construction, permaculture, gardening, product design, textiles, industrial design and home maintenance.

Sports-4-Life

Our sports, health, and physical education programme provides learners with the foundation for an active and healthy lifestyle. The programme is based on the Canadian Canadian Sport-4-Life programme and is offered in partnership with Sports-Hub. Our programme coaches children towards competent participation in rugby, cricket, soccer, hockey, tennis and netball, starting with children’s natural play and movement and progressing into sports-specific skills. We have also partnered with kinderkeneticist (biokinetics focused on children) to ensure healthy physical development.

Biokinetics for children

Sports provide the foundation for an active and healthy lifestyle. However, sports injuries can occur if children do not have the foundation physical and neuro-motor skills. Liberté School has partnered with highly trained health practitioners called Kinderkineticists (Biokinetics for children) to help prevent injury by stimulating and optimising the specific neuro-motor and physical skills students require to play and succeed at sports. Our Kinderkenetics programme is available to all aftercare students at no additional cost and is complemented by the Canadian Canadian Sport-4-Life programme offered in partnership with Sports-Hub.
