Toddlers 18 months to 3 years

At Liberté School, we provide a nurturing and stimulating environment where children can explore, learn, and develop in a manner most suited to them. The curriculum aims to support the holistic development of toddlers, recognizing their unique interests, needs, and abilities during this foundational stage of their educational journey. The focus is on holistic development and building cognitive skills while fostering independence, self-expression, social skills, and the joy of learning.

OUR GOALSCurriculum Goals for Toddlers

We prepare children for life. Our approach places equal emphasis on each child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth.

The learning environment for our Toddler community is designed to support their rapid growth and development during this crucial period. With an emphasis on holistic development within the framework of cognitive science, we provide a summary of our curriculum goals:

Practical Life
Children are encouraged to engage in activities that promote independence, coordination, concentration, and order. These activities may include pouring, spooning, sorting, dressing, cleaning, and caring for the environment.
Math
Within our environment, mathematical concepts are introduced through hands-on materials that allow toddlers to connect quantities with numbers as we explore number recognition, basic arithmetic operations, counting and concepts of quantity, size, and sequence. These activities develop mathematical thinking and lay the foundation for further mathematical understanding.
Nature and Outdoor Exploration
Toddlers have opportunities to connect with nature and the outdoors. Within our permaculture garden, they engage in activities that promote an appreciation for the natural world, such as planting, sewing seeds, observing plants and animals, and exploring the outdoors.
Sensorial
The sensorial materials in the curriculum stimulate the senses and help refine children's perception of colours, shapes, sizes, textures, sounds, and smells. Sensorial experiences promote sensory integration and, in so doing, cognitive development.
Language
Children are encouraged to communicate their needs and express themselves using words to help build and expand their vocabulary and understanding. We pay particular attention to how we talk to children and teach them vital communication skills using correct terminology and sentence structure, storytelling, songs, rhymes, and conversations.
Emergent Reading & Writing
Toddlers are introduced to the sounds of language through sound games, songs, and oral language exercises to develop phonemic awareness, laying the foundation for later reading and writing skills. Toddlers also explore the shapes of letters through sensory activities, while art activities help to develop fine motor skills and pencil grip.
Science
Science, scientific language, thinking and problem-solving are introduced in an age-appropriate and hands-on manner. The building blocks of geography, biology, botany and physics are presented in a way that stimulates a toddler's natural curiosity about the world around them.
Physical Education
The curriculum provides opportunities for toddlers to refine their fine and gross motor skills. Activities involving pouring, stacking, threading, drawing, balance and movement exercises help develop their hand-eye coordination, balance, strength, and control of movement through practical life and physical activities.
Culture
Children explore and appreciate different aspects of culture, encompassing geography, art, traditions, history, and music. Hands-on activities, storytelling, puzzles, timelines, etc., are used to develop children's awareness and appreciation of the diversity of human life and the world we live in and build a foundation for later historical understanding.
